What a small list can charge
68 newsletters under 5,000 subscribers print a main-slot price. They list a median $150 for one placement in one issue, and the middle half list $95 to $263, on a median list of 2,150 subscribers (printed prices, read 29 September 2026). Per reader that is about $70 per 1,000 subscribers, the highest of any size: a small list sells at a higher price per reader and a lower price per issue. From 5,000 to 19,999 subscribers the median is $310. The rates page lists every size, and the sponsorship calculator turns your list size into a price to ask.
What the numbers do and don't show
- They show that brands buy ads in small newsletters. They don't show how many slots those newsletters sold, at what price, or how long they waited for the first sponsor.
- The shares are a floor. They count only ads printed in the public text of an issue, so a newsletter that sells through paid-only posts or a network that prints no label looks like one with no ads. Detection also differs by email platform.
- A flat line under 5,000 doesn't mean size stops mattering. The monetization guide shows the share rising again from 5,000 up to 100,000 and more, and every price in the rates table rises with size.
- List sizes are counts the newsletter or its platform reports. Modeled estimates are left out, which leaves 7,775 of 12,308 newsletters in the table.
What to do at your size
- Under 1,000 subscribers. 38 of the 372 newsletters in this range ran a paid ad, so brands do buy here. The work is finding them: start from brands that already buy ads in your niche on the sponsor list, price near the small-list median above, and pitch with the pitch guide's template.
- 1,000 to 4,999. 226 of 1,995 newsletters ran a paid ad. beehiiv and Kit state no subscriber minimum but need a paid plan on their platform, and Passionfroot, Hecto, MediaPact state no minimum either. Paved's marketplace and Wellput are closed at this size.
- 5,000 and above. The share running ads climbs to 19% and the median main slot to $310. The monetization guide has the full ladder, and the pillar guide sets out every route.
Questions
Can you get a sponsor with 1,000 subscribers?
Some do. Of 1,247 newsletters with 1,000 to 2,499 subscribers, 143 (11%) ran a paid sponsor ad in the 90 days to 7 October 2026. A newsletter under 5,000 that prints a main-slot price lists a median $150 (68 newsletters, median list 2,150, read 29 September 2026).

26 of 273 newsletters under 500 subscribers (10%) and 12 of 99 at 500 to 999 (12%) ran a paid sponsor ad. Those are small counts, so read the shares as rough. They show that brands buy at this size, not how many slots sold or at what price.

It depends on the provider. Paved's marketplace needs 50,000+ subscribers and Wellput takes US newsletters of 20,000+. beehiiv, Kit, Passionfroot, Hecto and MediaPact state no subscriber minimum, though beehiiv and Kit need a paid plan on their platform. The small-newsletter roundup scores each on five criteria.
